How many porta potties do I need for an event?
An event needs 1 standard porta potty for every 250 guest-hours, rounded up. A 150-guest, 4-hour party is 600 guest-hours, so it needs 3 units. A 300-guest, 6-hour festival is 1,800 guest-hours and needs 8. Alcohol and meals add units, shown below.
| Guests | 2 hours | 4 hours | 6 hours | 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 10 |
| 500 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 |
Where the 250 comes from: one standard unit holds about 60 gallons and handles roughly 200 to 250 uses between services. Guests use a restroom about once every 2 to 3 hours on average. This is our dispatch planning rule, not a law; permits and venues can require more.
How many extra porta potties do I need when alcohol is served?
Add 1 porta potty for every 5 units when alcohol is served, and another 1 for every 5 when a full meal is served. A party that starts at 5 units becomes 6 with a bar, and 7 with a bar and dinner.
Worked example
A 200-guest wedding reception runs 5 hours with a bar and dinner. 200 × 5 = 1,000 guest-hours. 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 units. Bar: add 1 (4 ÷ 5, rounded up). Dinner: add 1. Total: 6 units. At least 1 should be wheelchair-accessible, and 2 handwashing stations cover 6 toilets.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A California construction site needs 1 toilet for every 20 workers, or fraction of 20, under Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526. A crew of 20 needs 1; a crew of 21 needs 2; a crew of 45 needs 3. Weekly service is included; add a second weekly service when a unit serves more than 10 workers in summer heat.

How many wheelchair-accessible units do I need?
Plan at least 1 wheelchair-accessible porta potty for every cluster of units, and 5% of the units in each cluster, rounded up. A row of 10 needs 1; a row of 21 needs 2. This follows section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards for portable toilets in a cluster.
Official text: ADA Standards §213.2. Compare units on the accessible unit page.
How many handwashing stations do I need?
Plan 1 handwashing station per site, plus 1 more for every 4 toilets. Events with food need a station near the food line. A row of 8 toilets at a festival needs 2 to 3 stations. Construction sites need washing facilities under Cal/OSHA §1527.
See handwashing station rental for capacity and refill details.
